If you have particularly sensitive skin that doesn't love fragrance then these eco sheets from Earth Breeze need to be on your radar. I have used Dr Beckmann carpet cleaner for a long time and always it has worked and my carpets are perfect. Washing has never been easier: Just pop one sheet into the washing drum and experience a highly convenient way to wash your laundry - even on short cycles. I have a large capacity front loader machine and live in a hard water area and found if I used one sheet it didn't wash the clothes properly but still foamed up so much that an extra rinse cycle was sometimes needed, but two while it washed the clothes perfectly made way too many suds and on one occasion doing a towel wash I had to run an extra four rinse cycles which would have definitely cancelled out any environmental benefit of using these.

Happily, there’s no need to sacrifice washing performance for greener credentials, as these more environmentally friendly products have improved considerably since the Good Housekeeping Institute first started testing them back in the 1980s and 1990s. Powder, though cheap, is messy to use and it can be tricky to know how much to measure out per wash. Lightweight and biodegradable, they are also vegan and are never tested on animals which is a huge green flag. Nonetheless, if you have babies, small children or adults with sensitive skin, they’re the ideal choice. It delivered a flawless performance in our colour retention test and scored highly for whiteness retention.

I've been using these detergent sheets for six months now after seeing them at the Glasgow home show. These are great for travel I brought them along on my recent holiday and used them for both hand washing and machine washing and I would probably use them for travel in the future, but I noticed they worked much better in the top loading twin tub type machine that was in the place we stayed in and I feel that maybe they were actually designed for top loader machines originally, as these are more common in other countries where this brand is sold. Nonetheless, they’re great for keeping colours bright and for everyday washing, plus they go straight into the washing machine drum (either in the detergent lid, or a specific capsule), minimising mess. They removed at least 80% of stains from cotton and polycotton too, although some colours dulled a little and our whites weren’t the brightest. Running your cycle at a lower temperature, for example, is a good start, as you’ll also be using less energy to wash your clothes.Lots of the products on our list have more sustainable packaging, be it entirely plastic-free, or made from recycled materials.
