But beyond the great plotting, and the superb writing style- and Goddard definitely has his own style which he perfected over time- what helps to make this novel so great is the characters, and their portrayal. This one has all the great characters and historical twists to qualify as one of his stronger novels. This one won't stop me from reading (or re-reading) Goddard, who is one of the best authors of this kind of historical suspense; it just wasn't the best book for me.
